The Work You Love Loves You Back

If you’ve been longing to find more trust, purpose, and flow in your career, this post is for you. Keep reading if your heart calls you to do so.

The exchange of love between earth and people calls forth the creative gifts of both. The earth is not indifferent to us, but rather calling for our gifts in return for hers—the reciprocal nature of life and creativity.
— Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer

here’s what you’ll learn from this article:

  1. Why the work you love loves you back.

  2. How having trust in your calling welcomes in the creative forces of the Universe.

  3. A personal example with this week’s topic.

Let’s get to it!

THE WORK YOU LOVE LOVES YOU BACK

(We use the term ‘work’ broadly throughout this post to refer to purpose, calling, career, etc. Pick whichever word resonates most profoundly with your heart.)

If you want to co-create with the Universe and bring your biggest, most meaningful gifts into the world, you must first trust that the work you love—your most important work—loves you back.

We’ll say that again…

The work you love loves you back.

Why does it love you?

Because it chose you.

You’re here for a reason. Whatever work calls you forward is an integral part of your two-pronged purpose here on earth.

That magnetic pull you feel towards a particular career field, task, or type of work isn’t a figment of your imagination.

It’s energy emanating from the Universe saying, “Hey you! Yes, you. I need your help!” And it chose you because you’re the most perfect channel for it to flow through.

This energy field that calls you towards a particular type of work needs you to transform it into tangible, touchable, game-changing realness in this world. It needs your unique voice, gifts, and perspective to give it life.

And so when you turn your back on your purpose, you rob the world of something exceptionally valuable—what would have been the Universe’s creative energy shared through the filter of your unique gifts.

It didn’t come knocking on your door just to change you, it came knocking to change the world, too.

Answer the door.

TRUST YOUR CALLING

Likewise, if you trust in your work, it will trust in you.

Reciprocal trust is at the core of reciprocal love.

When you trust in the work you love, the Universe steps in to co-create.

Of course, it’s easy to trust when things are unfolding in your favor, but there will inevitably be unforeseen hurdles, barriers, and snags along the way.

It’s in those moments that Resistance booms extra loudly, and it becomes even more tempting than usual to give in and give up.

And so this is where trust really comes into play.

The Universe has placed its trust in you, specifically, to transform its energy into something meaningful in this world.

When you turn your back on the Universe, it doesn’t turn its back on you.

It waits.

It trusts that you will return to it. It sends you signs, serendipitous signals, and loving nudges as it (im)patiently drums its fingers along the stars.

The Universe never stops trusting in you.

In the same way, you must learn to place your unwavering trust in the Universe.

This means accepting any unforeseen hurdles not as roadblocks but as meaningful detours in the process.

It means trusting that hurdles have been placed in your way not to stop you but to nudge you in a different direction or to invoke expansion within you.

Hurdles, barriers, and snags sharpen the clarity of your purpose. As your purpose sharpens, the message that your work conveys to others will be sharpened, too.

Which means it’ll hit harder and with more impact.

In other words, where the clear, easy-to-walk path might have given way to small ripples, the uncharted, thorny path could very well give way to big, game-changing waves. ✨🌊✨

And to that we say, “Grab your surfboard. It’s time to make waves.” 🏄‍♀️

MAKE IT REAL

ASHLEY’S EXAMPLE

“This week’s topic is specifically geared toward loving/trusting in our most important work and calling, but as we wrote it, it brought to mind a recent experience unrelated to work but very much about trust.

Very long story short, my husband, Dan, and I recently went through the process of buying a house—a house that felt like home the moment we stepped foot inside of it. This was our home. We could feel it in our bones.

We went into the mortgage process with full confidence. Although we’re both self-employed, we’re big savers and conscientious spenders who have worked hard and thoughtfully to get to where we are.

About a week into the process, a major blockade crashed down in front of what we’d assumed was going to be a slam-dunk mortgage approval.

As it turns out, one self-employed borrower scares the sh*t out of banks. Two self-employed borrowers together as a couple is basically an underwriter’s worst nightmare. If we would have had the same exact financial setup but had been working for someone else as  employees with W2s, we would have been golden. Not the case working for ourselves.

As soon as the hurdle appeared, it was all my mind could see. The house we loved on the other side vanished amidst a doubt-ridden haze as did the magical sense of serendipitous alignment that had unfolded in the weeks prior.

I began to question everything and strongly considered throwing in the towel on the purchase altogether. My thoughts shifted from hopeful, excited, and exuberant to doubtful, hesitant, and hopeless.

As I was flowing through yoga poses the next morning, I felt a strong pull to write to my intuition. And so I wrapped up my restorative flow and grabbed my journal.

Here’s what unfolded (unedited) on the page thereafter:

Q: ‘What am I supposed to learn from this situation with the house?’

Response: ‘You are supposed to learn to be brave, to trust when it seems like the net is gone. In trusting w/o a net, the Universe begins to step in to offer the most divine net of all. The divine net of self w/o self. The divine net of being. Be bold, unafraid, unwavering, and we will be there to catch you. Do not underestimate your own ability to catch yourself either. You are stronger than you think.’

Q: ‘Is this house meant for us?’

Response: ‘You already know the answer but we will happily remind you. Whatever is meant for you is waiting and so the barriers you perceive of in your mind are nothing more than mind-made fences. Find the gate—the house awaits.’

As my hand finished scrolling the last words onto the page, tears streamed down my face and a sense of peace and hopefulness returned.

The rest, as they say, is history. We trusted and we got creative. It all came together in the end despite the path being entirely different than we would have expected or chosen.

And I sit here today typing these words from the sunshiny comforts of my new office in our new home.”
