RECAP
Have you had a chance to read last week’s post?
In it, we talked about how the work you love—your purpose, your calling, your destiny—loves you back.
We also discussed how trusting in your calling completely and wholly, without judgment or fear, welcomes in the creative forces of the Universe.
And when we welcome in Universal creativity, we begin to engage in the beautiful, serendipitous process known as co-creation.
In moments of co-creation, we’re not forcing or efforting our way through our most important, soul-evolving work. Rather, ideas and thoughts seem to flow into our minds as if out of thin air.
We like to think about it this way:
There’s an infinite number of inspired ideas (and knowledge) just floating out there in space. These ideas exist in the form of energetic vibrations, just waiting for us to energetically align our own vibration with theirs. Once we do, the ideas and information flow freely and unencumbered into our minds.
Trust is magnetic.
When we trust fully in the Universe’s plan, that beautiful bank of inspired ideas opens up to us and offers a steady stream of creative knowledge.
But how do we know when the Universe is speaking to us?
Excellent question. Keep reading for our answer…
THE UNIVERSE’S CHOSEN LANGUAGE
As humans, we communicate through words, facial expressions, and tone of voice.
We rely so heavily on these three communication mediums that it’s easy to overlook the Universe’s preferred mode of communication when it comes to guiding us toward our outer purpose.
Any guesses as to how the Universe communicates with us about matters pertaining to our outer purpose?
If you guessed intuition, you’re right.
But there’s a bit more to it than that.
The Universe uses a very specific mode of intuitive communication to guide us on the path to our outer purpose.
When it comes to our outer purpose, the Universe speaks to us through curiosity.
It nudges and guides and directs us by dropping breadcrumbs (curiosities) for us to follow.
Take a moment to think about the things you’re curious about. You’ll notice that most of these curiosities emerge as images in your mind’s eye rather than words.
We place so much value on words that it can be difficult to trust in the seriousness of the images that flash within the mind.
But you can be certain that imagery—especially when it comes as blocks or chunks of visual guidance that peak your curiosity in a way that feels expansive—is of the Universe’s making.
DON’T UNDERESTIMATE YOUR CURIOSITIES
The thing about curiosities is that they’re… well… curious. 🤷♀️
The things we’re curious about can seem strange or “out of character” or even silly.
Please, please, please, never underestimate the power of one tiny, perhaps even “silly” curiosity. Especially those that pop into your mind more than once.
It’s often the curiosities that don’t “make sense” (to the rational mind) or don’t align with the you that you (or other people) think you are that will, if followed, lead you on a soul-evolving adventure.
A path you couldn’t have found through tenacious rational pursuit and yet by trusting in and following the breadcrumbs of your curiosities, was carved out for you in the most serendipitous way.
The things you’re curious about won’t always make sense.
Sometimes your curiosities will even feel like deterrents or distractions from the outer purpose your mind has set its sights on.
Why do I keep thinking about buying a telescope? That doesn’t have anything to do with X.
Why do I have the urge to garden? I’m not a gardener, and I need to focus on X.
Why do I have the desire to take up chocolate making? It has nothing to do with X.
If you take anything away from this email/post, let it be this:
Don’t waste time judging your curiosities. Get to work following them.
It’s in your best interest and the world’s to look beyond the ego’s labeling of your curiosities as “silly” or “meaningless” or “a waste of time”.
Instead, learn to trust that if curiosities exist in your mind’s eye, they’re meaningful to your soul’s evolution (and probably others’, too).
PURPOSEFUL CURIOSITY VS. PLAYFUL CURIOSITY
Purposeful Curiosity
Purposeful Curiosity is like a magnet.
It exists to draw you to (or back to) your soul’s purpose in a way you couldn’t have predicted.
This type of curiosity ends up being directly entangled with your outer purpose.
Playful Curiosity
Playful Curiosity serves as an energetic re-fueling station, metaphorically speaking.
The content of this type of curiosity never reveals itself as being directly related to your outer purpose, but following it will re-fuel the creative energy you have for your purpose.
You can engage with this type of curiosity when you want to reopen the co-creative conduit between yourself and the Universe.
Let’s talk a little bit more about how to engage with Playful Curiosity, in particular…
USING CURIOSITY TO COMBAT FEARFUL THINKING
As we mentioned above, curiosities of the playful type exist solely to reconnect you with the co-creative guidance of the Universe.
In this way, Playful Curiosity can be viewed as an energetic realignment tool.
When it comes to your purpose, it can be difficult to keep the fear of failure at bay.
Without intending to do so, the mind (ego) labels your purpose and all tasks under its umbrella as “important” to its own existence. Because it operates from a place of fearfulness and lack, the ego is always looking to curb its vulnerability and so it often becomes stuck or self-sabotages.
Fact of life: When the ego is involved in creative pursuits, it’s likely to get in the way.
Fear is kryptonite to the co-creative process. When you’re operating from a fearful headspace, the energetic connection between the Universe and your mind gets pinched off.
And so you’re left to go it alone with your mind.
If you ever feel fearful or “stuck” while carrying out your most important work, use Playful Curiosity to quiet the ego and clear unhelpful fear-based energy. Doing so will allow you to realign with the Universe’s co-creative forces.
When you engage with Playful Curiosity, you deliberately hit ‘pause’ on your most important work to take action that feels wholly playful and entirely low stakes so that you may return to your most important work with momentum, co-creative power, and game-changing fearlessness.
Examples
(We pulled these + summarized them from Liz Gilbert’s Big Magic*)
Einstein would play the violin when he was struggling to solve a mathematical puzzle. After a few hours, he’d usually find the answer he’d been looking for.
James Franco is known to pursue his interest in art, fashion, academia, and writing in between acting gigs. Not for the sake of his purpose but for the sake of later returning to his most important work with a reinvigorated co-creative edge.
Sometimes the quickest route back to your purpose is an intentional detour through Playful Curiosity.
“In other words: If you can’t do what you long to do, go do something else. You might think it’s procrastination, but—with the right intention—it isn’t; it’s motion. And any motion whatsoever beats inertia, because inspiration will always be drawn to motion.” — Liz Gilbert, Big Magic*
PROCRASTINATION VS. PLAYFUL CURIOSITY
The above quote illuminates an important distinction: the difference between procrastination (or Resistance) and Playful Curiosity.
The difference is that Playful Curiosity carries with it the intention of returning to your most important work, whereas procrastination is aimless and seeks only to avoid it.
Playful Curiosity is a tool—a purposeful detour—to realign with the creative forces of the Universe and return to the work you love.
It’s a deliberate action that holds, at its heart, the intention to clear the mind of fear so that it may re-open to the Universe’s brilliance and make big, beautiful, game-changing waves.
INTENTION
I trust in my curiosities and allow them to guide me.
